Lake of the Woods Jail Releases
Someone leaving Lake of the Woods County Jail can follow several paths. Bond, a court order, time served, or another approved disposition may return the person to the community. A longer detention can continue at Pennington County Jail or another neighboring county under a housing arrangement. A state commitment transfers the person into Minnesota Department of Corrections custody. A federal or immigration hold can move the person to a federal custodian. Only the maintained event should be called a release.
The most useful local record ties the booking to a release or transfer date and time, a disposition code, the authority for the change, and the receiving agency when custody continues. Minnesota VINE can supply a fast status event. Yet VINE is an agency-fed notification service, while the sheriff’s source record is the better source for exact time and type. A court order can explain the legal cause, but it usually does not prove when staff completed the physical exit.
| Outcome | Where the person goes | Best confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Community release | Outside custody, often with conditions | Sheriff release event plus VINE |
| Neighboring-jail transfer | Pennington or another named county jail | Transfer event and receiving-jail source |
| State commitment | MNDOC intake and prison system | Transfer record and MNDOC Locator |
| Federal handoff | USMS, BOP, or ICE custody | Sending record and correct federal source |
Confirm Lake of the Woods Releases
The county publishes no official jail roster, recent-release archive, 24-hour list, or 72-hour release feed. Its official online custody route is Minnesota VINELink. VINE covers county jails and detention facilities, not Minnesota state prisons. Search one person and read “release” and “transfer” as different events. A transfer alert means the person left this jail but remained detained elsewhere.
- Search Minnesota VINE by name, partial name, or a known facility identification number.
- Compare the booking and facility details so a similar name is not mistaken for the right person.
- Read the exact status. Follow a transfer to the named receiving jail instead of declaring a release.
- Call the Lake of the Woods Sheriff at 218-634-1143 if the event is new, absent, or unclear.
- Request the sheriff’s existing release or transfer record for exact time, authority, and public destination fields.
- Check MCRO for the case disposition, while keeping the court event separate from the jail exit.
The full named-person decision path and release-record fields appear on the Lake of the Woods County released inmates search. It also separates county, state, and federal systems.
Lake of the Woods Jail Records
The Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office operates the facility and maintains its county booking and custody events. Requests can be made in the lobby, by mail, through the official form, or by email at LE.Records@co.lotw.mn.us. County government posts general weekday hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the research does not establish separate Records Division hours, so calling before a visit is prudent.

A focused request should identify the full name, birth date if known, approximate booking date, and case or ICR number when available. Ask for existing public booking data, the release or transfer date and time, the maintained disposition code and authority, the receiving agency or destination if public, and the law-enforcement identification image. Do not require staff to create a custom recent-release report that the county does not maintain.
The Sheriff Records Division page shows the official contact and request route when a VINE event needs exact local detail.
Lake of the Woods Discharge Data
Minnesota Statutes section 299C.14 requires officials responsible for penal releases to furnish identification, service, and discharge information for BCA purposes. That reporting duty helps explain why a source discharge record exists even though the Lake of the Woods County Sheriff publishes no public release feed.
The law does not establish a public BCA released-person search. The public route remains the custodian under Minnesota data-practices law. Ask the Sheriff for the local booking and custody-ending event, or MNDOC for a prison release or final discharge. This keeps a statutory reporting duty from being mistaken for an online public list.
Lake of the Woods Jail Capacity
The 2025 MNDOC inspection identifies this as a secure coed 72 Hour Holding facility with five approved beds and an operational capacity of four. It has no juvenile-hold approval. Juveniles needing detention are sent to Northwestern Minnesota Juvenile Center in Bemidji, and their records are governed by different access rules. Adult release tools should not be used to seek protected juvenile custody data.
A short-hold license does not mean every person leaves at the same point or follows the same route. Court-authorized Huber and Sentencing to Service arrangements are exceptions noted by the county. A newly arrested person may bond out, while another person may be transported to a receiving jail. Each case still needs its own custody-ending record.
The official detention page presents the local facility, VINE, bail, warrants, and Huber information.
The county page offers no public roster or release archive, which is why VINE and a source-record request lead the lookup.
Why Lake of the Woods Transfers
A structural deficiency finding took effect July 1, 2021, and MNDOC imposed the present 72-hour maximum for most adult holds. The county’s January 2025 resolution describes the cost of housing and transporting people in neighboring counties and its effort to secure a replacement law-enforcement center. The 2025 inspection still notes aging-plant and maintenance concerns and requires corrective planning.
This history explains why the local search is transfer-heavy. It does not establish what happened to any named person. Pennington County is specifically documented in a continuing housing agreement, but it should not be assumed as the destination for every transfer. VINE or the sheriff record must supply the receiving facility. Once named, the receiving sheriff’s own custody channel and records office become the next sources.
The county resolution on the holding restriction describes the local transfer pressure.
The resolution gives policy context, while an individual release or transfer record remains necessary for a personal status claim.
Lake of the Woods Bond Releases
After a judge sets bail, cash or a bail bond can be posted through Court Administration from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. When the courthouse is closed, including weekends and holidays, the Sheriff accepts it. Exact cash is required, and personal checks or payment cards are not accepted. For an out-of-county warrant, the Sheriff takes cash bail around the clock only when the person is physically held in the Lake of the Woods jail.
Posting bail does not mark the physical release time. Staff must process the event, and another warrant, court order, or custodial hold may affect the outcome. The final sheriff record should distinguish bond release from transfer or another authority. MCRO can show bail conditions and the pending case, but an open case after release is normal and should not be presented as a contradiction.
Note: The county does not publish a fixed processing time, release door, property-return rule, transport plan, waiting area, or gate-money policy.
Lake of the Woods Custody Handoffs
A commitment to Minnesota prison moves the search out of the county-jail channel. The MNDOC Locator can show incarcerated people and people released from prison who remain under DOC supervision. Its Anticipated Release Date, when present, is a forecast rather than an accomplished release. A fully discharged person may later fall outside the Locator’s current-jurisdiction scope, making DOC Records the historical fallback.
Federal custody also requires care. BOP covers federal prisoners, while the U.S. Marshals Service has no comparable public locator. ICE’s locator covers current detention and a short period after release from ICE custody. No official reviewed county source documents a local ICE contract. Still, a transfer to ICE or USMS can occur in an individual case and is not release to the community. Ask the Sheriff for the maintained receiving authority when public.
The sequence matters. Preserve the local departure date, the receiving agency, and the next agency’s intake or status as separate facts. A BOP result stating that a person is not in BOP custody resolves only federal prison control. An ICE no-match can reflect the locator’s short post-release window. Neither result establishes that Lake of the Woods County released the person to the community. When public tools stop short, request the sending event first, then seek records from the named federal custodian.
| Handoff | Next search | What no match means |
|---|---|---|
| Neighboring jail | Receiving sheriff and VINE | Try the exact destination and booking details |
| MNDOC | Locator, then DOC Records | May reflect final discharge or viewer limits |
| BOP or USMS | BOP Locator or USMS FOIA | Does not exclude state, county, or ICE custody |
| ICE | ICE locator, then records request | Older releases leave its limited public window |
