Lake of the Woods Releases
A release record is not one universal sheet. Lake of the Woods County jail staff create a booking and a custody-ending event. Minnesota VINE republishes status events received from participating county jails. The district court preserves the legal orders and case disposition. Minnesota Department of Corrections records cover a later state-prison commitment, release to supervision, and final expiration. Each source proves a different part of the story. A name that vanishes from local view may signal release, but it may also mark a transfer to a neighboring jail.
The county jail is licensed as a small 72 Hour Holding facility. That local fact changes the search. Longer detention often continues outside Lake of the Woods County, so “gone from the jail” cannot safely be read as “free in the community.” A true community release may follow bond, a court order, time served, or another maintained disposition. A transfer into MNDOC, federal, immigration, or another county’s custody is still detention. The source record should state which event occurred and, when public, where the person went.
Lake of the Woods Release Types
Custody can end for several reasons. The label must come from the maintained sheriff, court, or corrections record. A bond release does not mean the charge was dismissed. A court sentence discharge can occur long after the person first left a jail. Likewise, a transfer date proves departure from one facility, not return to the community. These distinctions keep Lake of the Woods County release records tied to facts rather than assumptions.
| Event | What it means | Next source |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or conditional release | Custody ends while the criminal case may remain open. | Sheriff event plus the court case |
| Time served or court order | A sentence credit or judicial command ends the hold. | Release record and filed order |
| Transfer | Custody continues with another jail or agency. | Receiving jail, VINE, DOC, BOP, or ICE |
| Prison release | Physical confinement ends, often with supervision still active. | MNDOC Locator and DOC Records |
| Final discharge | The sentence or corrections jurisdiction reaches its legal end. | DOC discharge record or court order |
A booking charge is an allegation recorded at intake. It is not the later court result. Use Minnesota Court Records Online for the disposition, but use the custodian’s release event for the time and type of physical departure. The two records can be read together without forcing them to answer the same question.
Lake of the Woods Release Fields
A precise Lake of the Woods County release request should seek existing public data, not ask staff to create a new report. The most useful fields link the booking to the custody-ending event and distinguish community release from transfer. Availability and wording can vary by source system. Protected medical, safety, investigation, and unrelated personal data may be removed under Minnesota law.
| Field | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Booking number and intake time | The specific arrest or holding transaction |
| Booking agency and facility | Who created and held the record |
| Release or transfer date and time | When that custodian’s control ended |
| Disposition code or authority | The maintained reason for the custody change |
| Receiving agency or destination | Whether custody continued elsewhere |
| Bond indicator or amount | Public bail details tied to the event, if maintained |
| Booking image | The arrest identification image, not proof of release |
Lake of the Woods Discharge Reporting
Minnesota Statutes section 299C.14 requires officials responsible for institutional releases to furnish identification, period-of-service, and discharge information for BCA purposes. Electronic entry is required promptly under the statute. This is strong evidence that an institutional discharge trail can exist even when Lake of the Woods County publishes no recent-release list.
The statute does not create a public BCA portal for released people. Public access still begins with the agency that created or maintains the record, such as the Sheriff’s Records Division or MNDOC Records. Ask for existing source data and do not demand a new report compiled from BCA systems.
Request Lake of the Woods Releases
The Lake of the Woods County Sheriff Records Division accepts requests in the lobby, by mail, and by email at LE.Records@co.lotw.mn.us. The official public data request form asks for the subject, event, desired data, and delivery method. A person may inspect public data at no charge and does not have to identify themselves or explain a purpose. Yet contact details help when a request is unclear.
- Give the full name and any known birth date, booking date, case number, or ICR number.
- Ask for existing booking, release or transfer date, disposition code, authority, destination, and public identification image.
- Choose inspection, pickup, mail, email, or another available delivery method. Some records cannot be emailed.
- Ask for the legal basis and all separable public portions if any part is withheld.
- Compare the result with VINE and the court case. Preserve different timestamps and labels rather than merging them.
The sheriff form warns that a request may take up to ten business days. Minnesota’s general standard for public requests is prompt access within a reasonable time. Inspection is free. For one hundred or fewer standard black-and-white pages, section 13.03 caps the copy charge at twenty-five cents per page. The county also posts local amounts for longer copy jobs and media. Statutory limits control if schedules conflict.

According to the official records page, requests may be routed through the Records Division and fees depend on format and volume.
The captured page identifies the county custodian and is the right starting point for a local release or transfer record.
Correct Lake of the Woods Records
Lake of the Woods County permits free inspection of public data. A requester does not have to give a name or explain a purpose, though a way to ask follow-up questions may help staff resolve an unclear request. If a local release or transfer field appears wrong, identify the source record, state the disputed field, and provide the most precise event details available.
MNDOC has a separate data accuracy and completeness challenge for a DOC status, release date, supervision entry, or discharge record that appears incorrect. The county request route and the DOC challenge are not interchangeable. Send the correction to the agency that controls the disputed data, while preserving any VINE or court discrepancy for comparison.
Lake of the Woods Bond Release
Bond has a distinct local workflow. After a judge sets bail, Court Administration accepts cash bail or a bail bond on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. When the courthouse is closed, including weekends and holidays, the Sheriff’s Office takes the payment. Exact cash is required. Personal checks and payment cards are not accepted. An out-of-county warrant may be paid through the sheriff around the clock only when the person is physically held in the Lake of the Woods County facility.
Payment begins release processing; it is not the physical exit timestamp. Another hold, warrant, transfer order, or administrative step may still affect the outcome. The later custody-ending record should identify a bond release if that is what occurred. An open MCRO case after the release is normal because bail permits pretrial freedom under conditions. It does not decide guilt or end the case.
The county detention page provides the official bail route and closed-hours split.
The county page also directs users to VINE, which helps check whether the later event was release or transfer.
Lake of the Woods Work Release
Lake of the Woods County publishes Huber and work-release charges that should not be confused with a general debt imposed after release. A Lake of the Woods sentence carries a posted fee of $25 per day. A county resident serving an out-of-county sentence locally has a posted $45 daily fee. The baseline drug or alcohol test is $10. The probation page separately lists a $15 urinalysis and a $5 preliminary breath test during its stated testing window.
Huber is a court-authorized arrangement that may let a sentenced person leave custody for approved work while still serving the jail sentence. It is not the same as final release. The jail’s 72-hour restriction has an exception for authorized Huber or Sentencing to Service arrangements, so the ordinary transfer deadline does not answer every case. Confirm the person’s actual status and program authority with the Sheriff rather than treating a work schedule as proof that custody ended.
| Published item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Local Huber sentence | $25 per day |
| Local resident, out-of-county sentence | $45 per day |
| Baseline test | $10 |
| Probation-page UA | $15 |
| Probation-page PBT | $5 |
Lake of the Woods Release Sealing
Expungement means that qualifying records are sealed from ordinary public access. It does not always erase every fact held by every system. Minnesota’s automatic-expungement waiting periods for convictions run from discharge of sentence, making the verified discharge date important. The general periods described in section 609A.015 vary by offense class and are subject to exclusions and offense-free requirements.
Petition-based relief under sections 609A.02 and 609A.03 has its own service, hearing, and eligibility rules. A sealed record, final DOC discharge, old paper record, remote court-access limit, or name mismatch can all explain a failed public search. None proves the booking never existed. Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota identifies Lake of the Woods County within its service area for qualifying expungement help.
Note: A release date, a discharge date, and an expungement eligibility date are separate events and should never be substituted for one another.
Find Lake of the Woods Releases
The strongest search starts with the last known custodian. For a recent Lake of the Woods County arrest, use Minnesota VINE, call the Sheriff, and request the source release or transfer event. For a state prison sentence, use the MNDOC Locator and then DOC Records. Federal prison calls for BOP. Immigration detention calls for ICE. An uncertain criminal case starts with MCRO, preferably by case or citation number. No single portal covers all of them.
- Identify whether the last known hold was county, state prison, federal prison, immigration, or an unknown court case.
- Read the exact event word. Release, transfer, supervised release, discharge, and no match do not mean the same thing.
- For the county jail, search Minnesota VINELink and follow any transfer to the named receiving facility.
- Call the Sheriff at 218-634-1143 when the status is new, unclear, or missing.
- Request the underlying release or transfer record for exact time, authority, and destination.
- Use MCRO for the legal result and the correct state or federal system for later custody.
The Lake of the Woods County 24-Hour Releases page focuses on the same-day fallback workflow. A named-person search still needs source-level confirmation.
Lake of the Woods DOC Releases
The MNDOC Locator covers adults who remain under the Commissioner’s jurisdiction. That includes people in prison and some people released to community supervision. It is not a complete archive of every former prisoner. A fully discharged person may fall outside its current public scope, so an old no-match result should be followed by a DOC Records request.
| Search field | Use and limit |
|---|---|
| First and last name | Either or both; matching is prefix-based |
| MNDOC Offender ID | Requires the complete six-digit OID |
| Current Status | Controls whether the person is incarcerated or under another DOC status |
| Anticipated Release Date | A forward-looking date when displayed, not proof of release |
| Expiration Date | A separate sentence or jurisdiction endpoint |
| Caseworker and court file | May help route a status question or match the court case |
The official Minnesota DOC interface shows the available name and identifier search routes.
The current-status and date labels in a matching detail record must be copied exactly, because anticipated release and final expiration answer different questions.
Lake of the Woods Court Records
MCRO may show charges, dispositions, the Register of Actions, judgment, sentencing orders, warrants, and probation discharge. It usually does not record the exact instant a person crossed the jail exit. Lake of the Woods County District Court and the Sheriff share the same county complex in different suites, but they remain separate custodians. Court Administration handles daytime bail and warrant checks, while the Sheriff covers the stated closed-hours routes.
A key search quirk can hide a real case. MCRO defendant-name searches do not return pending criminal matters until a conviction exists under the court system’s rule, and dismissed or continued-for-dismissal cases can remain treated as pending for that search restriction. Use the case number, citation number, attorney identifier, or a courthouse terminal when a name search fails. The Lake of the Woods District Court page lists the local office and calendar route.
The court source can confirm the legal outcome while the sheriff, VINE, or receiving agency confirms the physical custody change.
Lake of the Woods Supervision
Leaving prison may begin supervised release rather than end DOC authority. Supervised release is the community portion of an executed prison sentence. Probation is a court-ordered community sentence or condition and may follow local jail time. A limited group with qualifying life, indeterminate, or specified cases appears before Minnesota’s Supervised Release Board. The actual status in the record should be used instead of calling every community case “parole.”
The MNDOC Locator may show a person released from prison but still supervised. Lake of the Woods County is routed to the Roseau field office in the Thief River Falls District. The state directory lists 218-452-0259, while the county probation page lists 218-452-5000. Both must remain labeled because the sources differ. Verification methods, warrants, abatement, and final discharge are covered on the post-release supervision page.
- Supervised release
- The community phase of a Minnesota prison sentence.
- Probation
- Court-ordered supervision that may exist without a prison term.
- Discharge
- The legal end of a sentence or corrections jurisdiction.
- Transfer
- A move between custodians, not freedom from custody.
Lake of the Woods Federal Releases
The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal prisoners from 1982 forward. A result can show a release date or that the person is not in BOP custody, but it cannot exclude county, state, immigration, or supervised status. U.S. Marshals detainees may be held in contract facilities. USMS has no comparable public person locator, so its records path is FOIA.
The ICE Online Detainee Locator covers current detainees and people released from ICE custody within the last 60 days. After that short window, an older no-match result proves little. ICE records or FOIA are the fallback. No official county source reviewed documented a local ICE contract. Still, an individual transfer can occur, and a handoff into ICE or USMS custody remains a transfer rather than a community release.
The official BOP locator is the proper federal-prison search path for a Lake of the Woods County custody chain.
The federal result must be confined to BOP custody and paired with other agency records when the full custody path is unclear.
Lake of the Woods Custody Check
Source scope is the key to a sound Lake of the Woods County released-inmate search. A current system answers who remains within its coverage. A source release record answers how a particular hold ended. The comparison below keeps those jobs separate.
| Source | Best use | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Minnesota VINE | County-jail status, release, or transfer event | Not connected to MNDOC prisons |
| Sheriff release record | Exact local custody-ending event | Requires a request because no feed exists |
| MNDOC Locator | Prison custody or ongoing community supervision | Not a full historical discharge archive |
| MCRO | Legal disposition, sentence, and later orders | Not the physical exit timestamp |
| BOP or ICE | Correct federal custody type | Does not resolve other jurisdictions |
For county-jail notifications, VINE is the correct Minnesota service. State-prison notification uses Minnesota Haven instead. A transfer alert should be followed to the receiving jail. A release alert should be confirmed through the custodian when the exact time or legal basis matters.
Lake of the Woods Transfer Pattern
The Lake of the Woods County Jail has operated under the DOC 72-hour maximum since a structural deficiency finding took effect on July 1, 2021. The county’s resolution describes the expense of housing and transporting people in neighboring counties while pursuing a replacement law-enforcement center. The 2025 state inspection still describes the small facility as an aging plant with five approved secure coed beds and four operational beds.
The county’s facility resolution explains why transfer is such a common competing outcome.
This policy context does not decide any one person’s status. It tells the searcher to look for a receiving jail before declaring a release.
Lake of the Woods Release Facilities
The county’s primary holding site and the systems serving transferred people form the relevant facility map. Juveniles are not part of this adult search. The inspection names Northwestern Minnesota Juvenile Center for juvenile detention, but juvenile access rules differ and adult release tools must not be used to expose those records.
- Lake of the Woods County Jail / Detention Center handles local short holds, releases, and transfers.
- Pennington County Jail and other receiving county jails may continue custody under a documented housing arrangement.
- Minnesota DOC facilities hold people committed to the Commissioner and track prison release or final discharge.
A community release from the local jail is confirmed by its release event. A neighboring-jail move is confirmed by the transfer record plus the receiving facility’s custody source. A prison release is confirmed through MNDOC status and records. Keeping those tracks separate prevents a quick name disappearance from becoming a false release claim.
Note: No annual release count, average stay, public transit plan, release door, property rule, or gate-money policy was found in official county sources.
